Barcelona, colour around the corner

A journal of facades, street scenes and the pleasure of looking up.

Sagrada Família
Sagrada Família

Look up in Barcelona and an ordinary block can become the reason to stop. A balcony, a curve in a facade or a small patch of colour changes the view. Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló give this journey two unmistakable landmarks; La Rambla brings it back to the movement of the street. Leave room around the visits for the city between them. Rather than fitting every famous building into one day, choose the places you most want to see and give each enough time.

Three details, connected

1. Sagrada Família2. Park Güell3. Casa BatllóPlaces along the waySchematic route · straight lines, not roads

Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló sit in different parts of the city. The straight lines show their relative positions, not a walking route or an order in which to visit. Check transport and entry arrangements before joining them into a day. Leave time around each stop for the surrounding streets; choosing fewer appointments makes it easier to pause when something catches your eye.

A city made of details

Sagrada Família encourages a long look at form and detail. Casa Batlló changes the language again, with a facade that rewards attention from more than one angle. La Rambla offers a different kind of scene: a broad pedestrian space with the city moving through it. These views need not compete for the same hour. Treat them as separate parts of the journey, and leave time to find an ordinary street or a quieter corner after the busiest places.

A closer look at Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló
Casa Batlló

The facade is worth more than a quick photograph. Look at the different parts of the building, then step back and see how they work together. The surrounding street gives the view a frame of its own. If you want to visit the interior, check current tickets and entry arrangements before making plans around it. Leave time afterwards to continue at street level, without turning the next building into a deadline.

Barcelona

A quieter pause helps the details settle. Find somewhere to sit, look through a few photographs and notice which shape or colour keeps returning. That is often a better guide to the next stop than the length of a sightseeing list.

Keep the colour

La Rambla
La Rambla

A curve or a colour can outlast the memory of a route. Keep the detail that first made you stop: the edge of a roof, a balcony seen from the pavement, a bright shape against the sky. Then give the final part of the day a simpler task. Find somewhere to sit, review the places you enjoyed and choose just one idea for a return. Barcelona offers plenty to look at; the pleasure comes from deciding what deserves another look.
